Uruguay will face either Canada or USA in the next stage of Rugby World Cup 2011 qualifying in the Americas, after they defeated Chile 46-9 to win the South American Championship also involving Brazil and Paraguay.
The victory follows Uruguay's 71-3 defeat of Brazil, also on home soil at the Charrúa Stadium in Montevideo, in their opening qualifying match on Wednesday.
Matias Arocena starred for Uruguay, the fly half making a stunning run to score a try three minutes into a second half that Los Teros dominated to keep alive their hopes of a third successive Rugby World Cup appearance.
Chile full back Javier Valderrama and Arocena had traded two penalties in the first half before Uruguay pulled clear with three more penalties from the fly half and his conversion to wing Santiago Gibernau's try.
Valderrama kicked another penalty to leave his side trailing 22-9 at half time, although that was as close as they got with tries from Arocena, prop Rodrigo Sanchez, number 8 Rodrigo Capo and another Arocena penalty.
In the other match played in the South American Championship on Saturday, Brazil came from 15-12 down at half time against Paraguay to win their first match in this year's tournament 36-21.
Brazil's RWC 2011 dream had ended with heavy losses to Chile and Uruguay, but they return home with a win following second half tries from wing Henrique Pinto, scrum half Felipe Silva, replacement Daniel Danielewicz and fly half Lucas Duque.
Paraguay had led 10-0 after 21 minutes following flanker Juan Cabanas's try, but Brazil responded with tries by centres Fernando Portugal and Moses Duque only to then see Guillermo Cattineo score again for their opponents.
