RWC 2019 preparations boosted by key decision
Rugby World Cup Chairman Bernard Lapasset has welcomed a move by the Japan Rugby 2019 Organising Body to apply for registration as an Public Interest Incorporated Foundation (PIIF) in Japan, to ensure that the Tournament can benefit from key provisions and services.
The important decision, made at the inaugural meeting of the Japan Rugby 2019 Council in Tokyo, reflects the ongoing commitment by the Organising body to deliver an exceptional Rugby World Cup that will be good for Japan Rugby and the Japanese people, good for Asian Rugby and good for the ongoing growth and development of the Game worldwide.
The Japan Rugby 2019 Council, which includes President Fujio Mitarai (Honorary Chairman of *Japan Business Federation, chairman & CEO of Cannon Inc.), Vice President Yoshiro Mori (President of Japan Rugby Football Union, Former Prime Minister of Japan) and Yoshio Nakamura (Vice Chairman and Director General of Japan Business Federation), were unanimous in their support of amending the ‘Articles of Association’ of the Japan Rugby 2019 Organising Body necessary to facilitate registration.
Once Japan Rugby 2019 is registered as PIIF, the entity, the door will open to important benefits for the Tournament and the Organisers, including access to a stronger financial platform to deliver the Tournament, while ensuring that the event is delivered appropriately and in the interest of the Japanese people. Japan Rugby 2019 is aiming this to be incorporated by the end of this fiscal year.
Lapasset said: "Planning and preparation for Japan's hosting of a first-ever Rugby World Cup in Asia is certainly gathering pace. Today's announcement reinforces the commitment of the Organising Body, working in partnership with RWCL to deliver a strong and hugely successful event that has multiple and long-lasting benefits for the Host Union, Japan, Asia and the global Game."
Japan Rugby 2019 President Mr. Fujio Mitarai said: “We will host the RWC 2019 on behalf of the whole of Asia, and of all Unions of the International Rugby Board around the world. Representatives from all sectors, not only of sports but also of political and economical sectors are represented on Council to form a strong team focused on delivering a successful RWC 2019.
"The step of becoming a Public Interest Incorporated Foundation by end of this fiscal year is another step forward. We are on track and on schedule for the preparation with a good relation with IRB and RWCL.”
