Hamamatsu City
During the Sengoku period, the young Ieyasu Tokugawa began his unification of Japan, with Hamamatsu as being one of the first places he gained a foothold in. Hamamatsu Castle came to be known as the “Shusse Castle” (stepping stone for success) as many of the lords of the castle were appointed to important government positions. The stone walls of the castle still remain from the time that Ieyasu was a lord.
