What is a number eight?
The number eight, sometimes known as the eighth man, is the third member of a team’s back row, along with the two flankers.
Number eights are the anchors of the scrum but can also be used as a potent attacking weapon from the set piece.
Where do they line up?
At scrum time, the number eight takes their position in between the two flankers and behind the second row.
What jersey number do they wear?
You probably don’t need to have completed your coaching badges to work out that number eights wear, drum roll, the number eight.
What do you need to be a good number eight?
Strength, physicality and a determination to take good care of the ball and make useful metres for your team when you have it.
Numbers eights need to be strong enough to push seven other players forwards but also must possess a turn of pace and a deftness of hands that will keep defenders guessing if and when they take possession from the base of a scrum or breakdown.
Who should I keep an eye on at RWC 2025?
Scotland’s Evie Gallagher (pictured above in action v Wales) is a threat on both sides of the ball. Shortlisted for Women’s Six Nations Player of the Championship earlier this year, she hit more defensive rucks than any other player while securing a tournament-high 10 turnovers.
Alex Matthews is a colossus at the base of the England scrum. A member of the Red Roses squad that won the World Cup in 2014, she is looking to avenge final defeats in 2017 and 2022 - both against New Zealand - on home soil.
Canada’s Sophie de Goede (lead picture) is another all-action presence at the base of the scrum. A one-woman wrecking ball who also kicks at goal. What’s not to like?
