Team Spotlight: USA

RWC USA

USA return to the Men’s Rugby World Cup stage in Australia with plenty to prove after missing out on the last tournament in France.

USA arrive at Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 aiming to reassert themselves on the global stage after missing the 2023 tournament.

The Eagles have a long history in the tournament, having featured in eight of the 10 editions to date, but have yet to progress beyond the pool stage.

The Eagles’ strength lies in their physicality and athleticism, though inconsistency and discipline remain areas to address.

Drawn in a competitive Pool E alongside France, Japan and Samoa, any hopes of progression will demand their most complete performances to date.

Players to watch

Dominic Besag

A rising star in the USA backline, Besag has already shown maturity beyond his years. The powerful centre made his test debut at 19 and combines physicality with sharp distribution and defensive awareness. His leadership background and rapid development mark him as a cornerstone of the Eagles’ future.

Sam Golla

Second-row Golla brings authority to the USA pack through his athleticism and work-rate. A former Major League Rugby rookie of the year, he has quickly transitioned into international rugby, offering lineout presence and defensive output. His leadership qualities and durability make him a key figure in the forward unit.

Paddy Ryan

Back-row Ryan adds experience and edge to the Eagles’ pack, shaped by his development in Irish and English systems including Leinster and Northampton. Dynamic at the breakdown and effective in contact, he has been ever-reliable since his international debut. His physical presence and long-running engine provide balance to the Eagles’ loose forward trio.

RWC icon

Todd Clever remains one of the defining figures in USA rugby history. The former captain holds the national record for test appearances and embodied the Eagles’ competitive spirit across multiple Rugby World Cup campaigns.

His leadership and relentless work-rate set the standard for future generations in American rugby.

RWC cult hero

Takudzwa Ngwenya’s try against South Africa at RWC 2007 is etched into not just USA rugby history but Rugby World Cup folklore.

Staring down superstar Bryan Habana, Ngwenya’s elite pace left the great Springbok wing clutching at air. Once free, the Zimbabwe-born Ngwenya raced away for a try that put him on the map as a global star.

Head coach

Scott Lawrence leads the Eagles into Rugby World Cup 2027 with a vision centred on growth and high performance.

A former international flanker, Lawrence progressed through USA Rugby’s coaching pathway, including roles with the U20s and national team.

Appointed head coach in 2024, he has focused on building depth, improving discipline and establishing a clearer identity, underpinned by his ‘Moonshot 2031’ project aimed at long-term global competitiveness.

Most memorable match

In their first match of the inaugural Men's Rugby World Cup in 1987, the Eagles secured their first victory, a 21-18 win over Japan.

It remains one of the most significant results in their history, setting a benchmark for what the team has sought to replicate in subsequent campaigns.

USA are two-time Olympic gold medallists in rugby, in 1920 and 1924. Before the game’s long absence from the Olympic programme, the Eagles established themselves as an early powerhouse, defeating France in both finals.

How they qualified

USA beat Samoa 29-13 in the fifth-place play-off of the Pacific Nations Cup 2025 in Denver to secure qualification for RWC 2027. With Fiji and Japan already qualified, the result ensured the Eagles claimed one of the available spots and returned to Men's Rugby World Cup after missing out in 2023.

Key stat

Two of USA’s previous three wins at Rugby World Cups have come against Japan – who they face in their final pool game at RWC 2027. After beating the Brave Blossoms in their first-ever Rugby World Cup fixture in 1987 (21-18), they did it again in Australia in 2003 (39-26).
