Welcome to the first of our Rugby World Cup 2025 insider guides.
Whether you are jetting in for England versus USA on 22 August or you are a curious local wondering what all the noise is about, this is the place for you.
Here, Sarah Hunter, England's RWC 2014 winning captain, current national team defence coach and most importantly a proud North-East native, shares her top tips for making the most of an era-defining tournament kicking off in Sunderland.
The best place to host the RWC 2025 opener:
Sunderland will be a great host because of the city and region’s genuine passion for sport, it’s love for hosting people from all across the country and world, and because of the variety of things to do in and around the city.
I was delighted when I heard a venue in the North East would host the opening match of the tournament. People are so passionate for sport in this part of the country and as high-level, international rugby isn’t as accessible as it is in the south, it is a massive opportunity to broaden the appetite for rugby across the region.
I just love the North East! It’s where I’m from; it’s where I found my love for rugby. The people are fantastic and it’s a part of the country filled with rich history.
Where to go before and after England v USA on 22 August:
There are great travel links to various places in and around Sunderland. Roker and Seaburn beaches aren’t too far away and there is also Hylton Castle, Herrington Country Park, or the North East Land, Sea and Air Museum.
Not too far down the road there is the iconic Angel of the North sculpture too, which is well worth a visit.
From a food and drink perspective, pubs like Greens and Street Bar are popular.
Or head to the Colliery Tavern or Hilton Hotel which are closer to the Stadium of Light.
Where to watch RWC 2025 matches on TV:
Obviously the best place to watch the first match is in person at the Stadium of Light!
However, if you’re unable to grab yourself a ticket, Chesters Sunderland has a great vibe on match days as does Sloanes Sports Bar.
Community rugby clubs to visit:
Sunderland RFC, Houghton RUFC, and Washington RFC are local to the city. They are all very welcoming clubs as are all the clubs in and around the city.
Must do while in Sunderland:
The National Glass Centre; Sunderland is renowned for it glassmaking and this is fantastic place to learn about a significant part of the city’s industrial heritage.
Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens; this is a great way to get a sense of the city’s history and present day.
Mowbray Park; a lovely green space in the heart of the city, fit for picnics and walks.
