Stadium of Light

Capacity: 48,707

Let there be Light. Sunderland’s Stadium of Light will kick things off at Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 with the opening fixture in August, as hosts England take on USA.

The home stadium to football in the city, Sunderland AFC have played their home games since the stadium opened in 1997. It’s been the scene for home football internationals as recently as 2023. And for the music fans amongst us, it’s even hosted everyone from Rihanna to Elton John.

It’s the most northern point for the tournament, and an opportunity for others to be inspired by the likes of 2021 World Player of the Year, Zoe Aldcroft. “We’re super excited for more rugby-loving fans to experience international rugby in the north of England and we’re also relishing the chance to meet new fans of the sport.”

Promising to begin the tournament in spectacular style, Sunderland is preparing to put on an unmissable show. And as a pathway to other major cities in the north of England and Scotland, it’s a perfect chance to see even more of the British Isles.
