RWC Spain 2

Spain are back at a Men’s Rugby World Cup after 27 years away from the game’s grandest stage.

Spain have worked tirelessly to reforge their identity and earn themselves a ticket to Men's Rugby World Cup 2027 under Pablo Bouza – and will be looking to make their mark in Australia.

Los Leones will have outside ambitions of making the knockout phase, though qualifying from a pool featuring Argentina, Fiji and Canada will be far from straightforward.

Their mobility, determination and unpredictability will boost their chances, as long as they can remain confident from start to finish.

Players to watch

Joel Merkler

Spain’s tight-head prop will undoubtedly be a massive asset for his side, not only for his scrummaging prowess but also for his physicality and leadership, qualities that have propelled him to become one of Toulouse’s leading front-row operators.

Estanislao Bay

Pure entertainment, that’s what Bay is all about. The scrum-half can turn a game upside down with a snap pass or clever kick. A cultured player, Bay serves as one of the foundations of the modern Spain side, playing a vital role in their destiny.

Lucien Richardis

The talented Toulouse utility back will be one of Spain’s finest assets in Australia, thanks to his refined kicking game and unpredictability factor.

RWC icon

Andriy Kovalenco may not have been born in Spain, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t considered one of the best players to have played for the Iberian country.

At Rugby World Cup 1999, he was not only Spain’s top points scorer – landing five penalties in their opening match against Uruguay – but one of the team's main driving forces. Kovalenco’s performances in that tournament are still proudly remembered by the Spanish rugby community.

RWC cult hero

'Catalan Flash' Oriol Ripol was one of the finest backline players to come out of the Spanish grassroots system, whose sheer pace could leave any tackler flailing in the dust.

The winger’s vibrant flair and running style made life difficult for Uruguay at Rugby World Cup 1999 and propelled him to England, where he played in the Premiership for Northampton Saints and Sale Sharks.

Head coach

Leading Los Leones since late 2023 has been former Argentina back-row forward Pablo Bouza, who previously had five years as an assistant coach with Los Pumas.

The 52-year-old, one of Argentina’s main men at Rugby World Cup 2003, has reinvigorated Spain by injecting confidence and direction into the team. Under his leadership, they have claimed memorable victories over Portugal, Tonga and Uruguay, showcasing a relentless mindset.

Most memorable match

Spain v Uruguay produced an enthralling pool contest at Rugby World Cup 1999 in Galashiels, Scotland, with Los Leones coming close to an upset win.

While the Spaniards couldn’t cross for a try, Kovalenco landed five penalties to keep them in the game. But trailing by seven points entering the closing moments, Spain’s last attack ended up being intercepted by Uruguay's Juan Menchaca, who sprinted away to score the clinching try.

Did you know...?

Did you ever wonder how astronaut suits came to be? It was partially thanks to Spanish military engineer, physicist and aeronautical scientist Emilio Herrera Linares, who in 1936 created the stratonautical space suit, the grandfather of the space suit.

In that year, he had planned to board a stratospheric balloon flight and developed a suit to facilitate the experiment. Unfortunately, the Spanish Civil War broke out, and he never had the opportunity to test it.

RWC history

Spain have only competed at one previous Men's Rugby World Cup, finishing bottom of their pool in 1999 after defeats by Uruguay (27-15), South Africa (47-3) and Scotland (48-0).

Key stat

Spain are the only side not to have registered a try at a Men’s Rugby World Cup. They were unable to cross the line in any of their three pool games in 1999, their only previous tournament appearance.
