Canada v Scotland match preview

It is all to play for in this top-of-the table Pool B clash, with the winners likely to avoid tournament hosts and world No.1 ranked England

This Canadian team now contains the highest female points scorer of all-time - Sophie de Goede - and the nation's most capped rugby player full-stop, Tyson Beukeboom. The fact both pack down together in the second-row only cements the growing aura around this powerful yet free-flowing team. With several Exeter Chief players in their ranks, including skipper Alex Tessier, the reds will be hoping for plenty of support.

Scotland head coach Bryan Easson has been quick to highlight what an "opportunity" this match is for his side. Two impressive wins, against neighbours Wales and an inspired Fiji, have got heartbeats racing. Now, can they do it against the world No.2s? Their exciting backline, led by the likes of winger Fran McGhie and centre Emma Orr, will need to fire if so.

Kick-off: 12:00 BST, Saturday, 6 September

Venue: Sandy Park, Exeter

Canada team:

Canada key's player: The likes of de Goede and captain Tessier rightly demand considerable attention but make space for the indefatigable Beukeboom who will win her 81st cap on Saturday - a new record for a Canadian rugby player. Expect tons of engine-room work and unflashy brilliance from the four-time RWC second-row.

Scotland team:

Scotland's key player: No wonder Evie Gallagher was short-listed for the Women's Six Nations 2025 Player of the Championship. The number eight has been critical to Scotland's early promise at this tournament. Quick and powerful and with a enviable rugby brain, Canada will be well aware of all that Gallagher offers.

Recent head-to-heads:

The two teams have not met since 2018, when Canada ran out three-point victors.

What Canada said:

Canada's head coach Kevin Rouet:

"Scotland are peaking at the right time, so it’s good for them and sometimes as a coach you are stressed as Canada. To maybe peak too early, but I think we are on the same boat as them with two victories.

"Now it is up to us to get the third one, we are working to be a very angry opponent because we know who we could face if we lose this game [England]. Both teams will really want to win this game.

"She (Beukeboom) brings the experience, she is amazing offensively and defensively and she brings a lot to the team on the field being quite violent on defence, but she’s very smart in offence. I love the kind of leader she is. She says what is on her mind and I like that."

Canada captain Alex Tessier:

"I love it, I’ve been super excited for this one especially. This (Exeter) is my new home now and my home for the PWR season (playing for Exeter Chiefs). So, it will feel special, and I know that a few people in the stands will be there for us and hopefully for me a
little bit. I can’t wait."

What Scotland said:

Scotland head coach Bryan Easson:

"Huge there’s a couple of routes to semi-finals and finals, and we are well aware of the route that we want to take.

"We made it very clear at the start: we're not here being a number; we're here to get to latter stages and we believe our performances have shown the progress we're making.

"Playing Fiji last week was really good for us a because they were very physical, which Canada are as well. Canada, believe or not, also offload more than Fiji, so we've had a fair idea of what we're coming up against.

"I'm really pleased how everybody's attacking, the backs are obviously finishing off a lot. There are some real threats in there. I thought in particular last week on transition, we were so sharp."

Scotland captain Rachel Malcolm:

"As Scots, we love that underdog mentality but we're hugely excited. We've got huge amount of energy out of the way we've been able to play, but we've also highlighted some like real key areas that we can  improve on. So we're looking for an even better performance."
