Quickfire questions with Australia's Maya Stewart

Australia back discusses who has the worst taste in music in the team and reveals a love for balsamic vinegar with ice-cream...

What’s one place you’ve visited that everyone should go at least once?

South Africa – it was such a cool experience visiting last year. Culturally there’s a lot to learn and living there would be relatively cheap. It was great.

What's your favourite expression that is commonly used in Australia and what is its context?

My brother and I always say ‘fair dinkum’ which can mean asking for the genuineness of a statement, or ‘as useless as t**s on a bull’ is a also good one, which basically means something is useless.

What’s your ‘hear me out’ food combination that you love?

I have a few. This is from TikTok because I tried it but balsamic vinegar and vanilla ice-cream. Watermelon and feta cheese, chilli and mango and any vegemite (Australian spread) with avocado and tomato. Or honey on random things like peanut butter or cheese.

Who has the best 'game face' in your team?

I’ll go with Ashley Marsters, she has a pretty good game face once she crosses the line.

Who has more fun on a night out - forwards or backs?

Backs can get pretty loose. It depends, but probably backs.

What part of Australia should everyone visit in their lifetime?

I should say somewhere naturally beautiful but I think Sydney has so much to offer.

Do you have an irrational fear?

I’m pretty scared of dying, but we’re all going to die so I’ve got to get over that.

If you could appear as an extra on your favourite TV show, which one are you choosing?

I’ve watched the Gossip Girl series eight times over so would say that. Originally I loved Serena (Blake Lively) but then learned to love Blair (Leighton Meester). I would’ve loved to have been an extra when they were 20.

If you could eliminate one house chore, what would you get rid of?

Packing and unpacking the dishwasher, I just find it so annoying. It’s convenient but it all has to go back and you can’t put pots or pans in there.

What food does Australia do better than anywhere else in the world?

I feel like Australia does a lot of it better, there’s just so much variety and diversity and the quality of the product. Whether it’s Asian fusion or Greek or Indian, you can get anything and we’ve got high standards.

What’s one stadium in the world you haven’t yet played in that you would love to?

I really want to play in Scotland at Murrayfield one day. I debuted against Scotland and have heritage there.

Who has the worst taste in music on your team?

There’s so many and they tend to put themselves as ‘DJ’ and sometimes they’re really good and other times, respectfully, silence would be better. Adi Talakai can be hit and miss on the tunes.
