THE BASILICA OF SAINT-DENIS

The basilica of Saint-Denis is a major building in the history of France. The first elements of Gothic architecture appeared here as early as the 12th century, with ribbed vaults and high windows. It then became a royal necropolis under the reign of King Saint Louis in the 13th century. Magnificent stained-glass windows, some of which have been restored, illuminate 800 years of funerary sculpture, from medieval recumbent figures to 16th-century mausoleums. The basilica has stood the test of time and stands as a symbol of French heritage.

PAUL ÉLUARD ART AND HISTORY MUSEUM

Paul Éluard Art and History Museum is housed in the former Carmelite convent of Saint-Denis. It was inaugurated in 1981, in the conventual buildings saved from destruction by the town of Saint-Denis. The neo-classical chapel was built in 1779, thanks to the arrival of Madame Louise de France, daughter of King Louis XV, who began as a Carmelite nun and later became the convent's superior.
You will find an archaeological collection illustrating the rich past of the town and its abbey, a history of Carmel in the former Carmelite cells, a collection devoted to the surrealist poet Paul Éluard, a child of the town, and the largest collection concerning the Commune and the siege of Paris in 1871.
