The headquarters of the Spanish National Sports Council (CSD) hosted an event today to unveil Spain's squad of 32 to represent the country at Women's Rugby World Cup 2025.
The tournament gets underway in England on 22 August and Spain kick off their campaign against seven-time champions New Zealand on 24 August in York, before further Pool C matches against Ireland and Japan.
The event brought together prominent figures from Spanish sport, including Paloma Loza, Rosi Vega and Alicia Yubero, who played for Spain in the very first Women's World Cup in 1991 and presented the 32 players with their jerseys.
"This World Cup is more than a competition," said Elena Vallejo, RFER vice president of women's rugby. "It is an opportunity to consolidate the work of generations.. an opportunity for 'Las Leonas' (Lionesses) to write a new chapter in the history of Spanish rugby and serve as an inspiration to thousands of players who dream of one day wearing this jersey."
National coach Juan González Marruecos added: "Without a doubt, this World Cup should serve not only to put Las Leonas back among the elite, but also to show the entire country our character, grit, and commitment. A national team that performs and fights every minute on the pitch, and which I hope many people can feel represented and proud of in this great competition."
Spain did not compete at the last tournament played in New Zealand in 2022, however four of the players - Anne Fernandez de Corres, Laura Delgado, Monica Castelo and Lourdes Alameda - competed at Rugby World Cup 2014 in France.
