What is a fly-half?
The fly-half - also known as a number 10 or first five-eight - is the primary attacking playmaker for any team.
It is their job to decide what to do with the ball when their side wins possession. They are also often a team’s goal kicker.
Where do they line up?
The fly-half lines up inside or outside the scrum-half - depending on whether the team is attacking the blindside or openside - with the centres and back three outside of them.
What jersey number do they wear?
Fly-halves traditionally wear the number 10 jersey.
What do you need to be a good fly-half?
Good hands, a good boot and perhaps most importantly of all an understanding of the game and an awareness of where the space is and where gaps in an opposition defence will appear.
Once hidden when it came to defence, the strength to withstand a barrage of tackles and a steady stream of powerful carriers is a must.
Who should I keep an eye on at RWC 2025?
Ireland’s Dannah O’Brien is a former Gaelic football player who has the ability to kick the ball miles. She is also an adept playmaker with soft hands and a brain that allows her to see things before others know they’re on.
Faitala Moleka meanwhile is another player with a bright future. The Australian fly-half can play full-back as well as fly-half and is a supreme running threat. As the recent Pacific Four Series proved though, she is accurate from the kicking tee too.
