Rugby explainers: What is a full-back?

No matter whether you caught the buzz in the run-up to Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 or are a more seasoned follower of the oval-ball game, we hope to educate. Next up, we catch up with the sweepers in the backfield: full-backs.

What is a full-back?

For a long time full-backs were seen as the last line of defence; patrolling the space behind their backline colleagues and pouncing on any danger that came their way.

More recently, though, they have come into their own in an attacking sense, linking with the wingers either side of them and using their pace and agility to pose questions to opposition defences.

Where do they line up?

Full-backs are usually the deepest member of their team, ready to put out fires or kickstart counterattacks with equal relish.

What jersey number do they wear?

A team’s full-back traditionally wears the number 15.

What do you need to be a good full-back?

Pace, a strong boot and an ability to read the game to perfection.

Full-backs must be able to sense their moment to strike, on both sides of the ball.

Who should I keep an eye on at RWC 2025?

Reigning World Rugby Women’s 15s Player of the Year Ellie Kildunne is one of the most electric players in the game - male or female. Kildunne has a knack of knowing when to join England’s attacking play and has the pace and ability to get over the try line whenever she does. Expect to see her trademark cowboy celebration on display at the World Cup.

Claudia Peña heads into her debut World Cup in stunning form. The Spaniard was named Harlequins’ Players’ Player of the Season for 2024-25 – no mean feat when you consider Kildunne is one of her team-mates.
